Abstract:Abstract: Atmospheric element deposition is still poorly understood in Taiyue Mountains, Shanxi Province. In order to monitor the possible atmospheric pollution of harmful elements in the mountains and the potential effects of the basins, the samples of the lichen Xanthoria elegans were collected from 15 sites, and the concentrations of 7 elements (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, S, Sb and Zn) in these samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. The statistical methods, including correlation, cluster and ANOVA analyses, were applied for data processing. The results showed that the concentrations of these elements in this area were generally higher than those in the “clean area”, but lower than those in the “severely polluted area”, indicating that a certain degree of atmospheric harmful element pollution occurred in the region. Q-mode cluster analysis separated the sites into two groups, which were significantly different in terms of distance from the nearest basin (DFNB) and concentrations of most elements. The sites near the basin (DFNB=13.7±7.987 km) had higher concentrations than those far from the basin (DFNB=32.5±6.062 km) for 6 elements (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn). Concentrations of 5 elements (As, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn) were significantly correlated to the DFNB (r≤-0.59; P≤0.02). These re-sults indicated that the air quality in the mountains had been affected by the atmospheric pollutant transportation from the basin. Sulphur concentrations had a low spatial heterogeneity (CV<10%) and a poor correlation with the DFNB, and were not significantly different between the two groups of sites (P>0.05). However, S concentrations posed a decreasing trend with the increasing DFNB, indicating that the anthropogenic S from the basin may be predominantly transported to the mountains in gaseous form, which is more prone to disperse than particulate materials. Our results confirmed that X. elegans is applicable to assessing atmospheric harmful element pollution in Taiyue Mountains.
