Abstract:Abstract: Gasotransmitters are gaseous molecules which are endogenously produced in living body and have biological effects. Three gasotransmitters, namely nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), have been discovered. Gasotransmitters have many effects, such as anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, vasodilation, inhibiting apoptosis, protecting cardiac function and so on. In cardiovascular system, mitochondria play a significant role in maintaining energy metabolism of cardiomyocytes. Mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to various cardiovascular diseases. Gasotransmitters mediate mitochondrial functions by regulating mitochondrial biogenesis, mitochondrial fusion and fission, mitophagy and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, so as to maintain physiological function of cardiomyocytes. Herein, the role of three gaseous signal molecules on mitochondria in cardiovascular system is summarized.
