Abstract:Abstract: Medicinal plant resources are widely used in China and are exported abroad. So far, most Chinese herbal medicines are still obtained by traditional field cultivation and wild resource exploitation. These methods not only require a long production cycle, but also lead to extinction of some characteristic plants due to over-excavation, resulting in short supply of these raw materials and their active ingredients. Plant protoplast technology is a method of plant resource protection, using rapid proliferation of plant cells. It can effectively solve the shortage of medicinal plant resources and improve their utilization efficiency, therefore it has important economic and reference values for endangered wild plants. Herein, principles and methods of protoplast culture and its application in medicinal plant resources are reviewed. The problems and other aspects of this technology are also described and analyzed for sustainable and efficient development and uti-lization of these useful resources.
