Abstract:Abstract: Iron is an essential nutrient for most of microorganism and host, since it is an important cofactor for many proteins and enzymes. In order to infect successfully, pathogen has evolved multiple mechanisms to obtain iron from the host, mainly including ferric transport system and heme transport system. For the host, iron plays an important role in cell respiration and DNA replication, however, too much iron will produce cytotoxicity. So, iron concentration in the host must be regulated strictly. In order to prevent pathogen infection, the host has evolved a series of mechanisms, such as “nutrition immune”. Here, how pathogens acquire iron from the host and how the host prevents the iron acquisition of pathogens are discussed, which could provide theoretical basis for enhancing host immunity to prevent bacterial infection and developing effective non-antibiotic drugs.
