Abstract:Abstract: To investigate the expression of plectin (PLEC) in multistage of colonic epithelial carcinogenic stroma and its clinical significance, a set of formalin-fixed and paraffin embedded tissue specimens, including 40 cases of normal colonic mucosa (NCM) tissues, 40 cases of adenoma (AD) tissues, 30 cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) tissues, 50 cases of invasive cancer (IC) tissues and their matched lymph node tissues, were obtained from Xiangya Hospital and used for detecting the PLEC expression in colonic epithelial carcinogenic stroma by immunohistochemistry. Correlation analysis of the expression level of PLEC in colon carcinoma stroma with clinical characteristics was performed by statistical methods. The result of immunohistochemical staining showed the PLEC expression in stroma was progressively increased during the colonic epithelial carcinogenic process (P<0.05). PLEC was mainly stained in vascular endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts in stroma. The statistical analysis showed that PLEC up-regulation was not correlated with age or gender, but correlated with advanced clinical stage (P<0.05) and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). The data suggest that PLEC over-expression in stroma might play an important role in the colonic epithelial carcinogenic and metastatic processes. The results will be helpful to provide new clues for early detection and treatment of colon carcinoma.
