Abstract:Abstract: The peroxisome, an organelle with variable amounts in different cells and cellular microenviron-ment, is involved in fatty acid metabolism, plasmalogen synthesis and oxidative stress. The variability in pero-xisome number has proved to be closely related to its degradation. With more and more research on peroxi-somes, which were thought to be less important than mitochondria, a more comprehensive knowledge has been achieved in degradation of peroxisomes in recent years. Herein, the degradation process of mammalian peroxisomes and the relationship between this process and diseases are reviewed, focusing on pexophagy, in hope to deepen the understanding of peroxisomal degradation and its role in diseases.
