Abstract:Abstract: The Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) from the bacterium Vitreoscilla sp. is an oxygen-binding protein. In recent years, via the introduction of the Vitreoscilla hemoglobin gene (vgb) to the host bacteria, VHb is attracting great attentions due to its potential in directional transformation of antibiotic-producing strains to hypoxia-tolerant recombinants. Under hypoxic conditions, both the metabolic efficiency and antibiotics yields can be increased though the expression of vgb in the host bacteria. Thus, the construction of hypoxia-tolerant recombinants by gene engineering can reduce effectively the cost of antibiotics production. Firstly, the progress of VHb in recent years is briefly introduced, and then the construction of hypoxia tolerant antibiotic-producing strains is mainly summarized. Finally, the application prospects in antibiotics production are proposed.
