Abstract:Abstract: Osteoporosis has some influence on the occurrence and treatment of periodontitis, but the exact mechanism is not clear. An osteoporotic rat model was established by bilateral oophorectomy, and the expression of leptin receptor (OB-R) in the periodontal tissues of osteoporotic rats was detected by immunohistochemical staining and semi-quantitatively analyzed by Image-Pro Plus (IPP) software. The expression differences between the ovariectomized rats (OVX group) and the sham-operated rats (Sham group) were compared to explore the effects of osteoporosis on periodontal tissues. OB-R was widely expressed in the periodontal tissues of both OVX and Sham rats, with especially strong expression in junctional epithelium and periodontal ligament and relatively weak expression in alveolar bone and gingival connective tissue. Interestingly, it was found that the expressions of OB-R in gingiva, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament of the OVX rats were significantly increased, compared with those in the Sham rats (n=10, P<0.05). The results demonstrated that the expression of OB-R was up-regulated in osteoporotic periodontal tissue, which might be ascribable to the compensatory increase of OB-R in the organism with osteoporosis.
