Abstract:Exosomes are mainly derived from intracellular multivesicular endosomes and are secreted into the extracellular space through fusion of the outer membranes of the multivesicles with the cell membrane, with a diameter of 30~100 nm. Exosomes can be used as a potential biomarker and a carrier for transmitting biological information between cells. Recent studies have shown that exosomes contribute to the early diagnosis of neurological diseases. In cellular experiments and animal models, exosomes can promote nerve regeneration and restrain neuronal apoptosis. Herein, the isolation and identification of exosomes, and their application in the diagnosis and treatment of three common diseases of the nervous system, including ischemic stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, are reviewed.
